Muthuswami Deekshithar krithi
Sri Muthuswamy Deekshithar is one among the musical trinity or the Sangeetha mumoorthi. Dr. Vellore A.R.Srinivasan pays reverential musical homage to the Nadajyothi by composing and rendering this song. It is in Nadanamakriya raga,set to Adi tala.
I came across a wonderful song written by Poet Vedhanayakam Pillai during British Rule. He was a Munsif in a Court of Law then. I am giving the song in both Roman and Tamil scripts.

A point that can never go missed in this Raag is that this bears somewhat of a resemblance to Raag Punnagavarali, though the latter has its janya in hamumaththodi.
Possibly both these raagas are sung in madhyamasruthi gives rise to such a resemblance. Only readers of this posting should confirm.

Nadhanamakriya is a Carnatic raag which can sedate you and push you into oblivion.
You reach the Seventh Heaven of Bliss and Joy on listening to this.
Let us listen to a few songs from this raag Nadhanamakriya. Erudite call this raag NISHADHANTHYA , as the arohanam ends with the swara nee.
This raag is sung always in madhyama sruthi only, as is the case of raagas like punnagavarali or Chenchurutti.
Justice to this Raag can only be by a song from MYSORE MAHARAJA sung by illustrious
Dr.M.S.Subbalakshmi.

An Interesting Episode related to Raag Nadhanamakriya.

By sheer chance, I landed on a blog which brings out this impressive story relating to Anandha bharatiyar, and Gopalakrishna Bharathi.
Anandha Bharathiyar, a Vaishnavite musician, lived in Thiruvidaimaruthur. He has tuned ‘Bhagavata Dasamaskantham’, ‘Thiruvidaimaruthur Nondi Natakam’ etc. Goplakrishna Bharathi and Ananda Bharathi shared a good friendship and Goplakrishna Bharathi would sing his compositions to Anandha Bharathi and get his feedback. Anandha Bharathi would invariably end up admiring Gopalakrishna Bharathi’s tunes and would praise his kirtana structure.
Once, Gopalakrishna Bharathi was singing one of his compositions tuned in Raga Nadanamakriya. It is no wonder that he was totally immersed in the song as it was in praise of his favorite god ‘Nataraja’.

When Bharathi was deeply absorbed in the song, Anandha Bharathiyar visited him. He requested Gopalakrishna Bharathi to sing the kirtana from the beginning. Goplakrishna Bharathi obliged and started singing the song. The rendition was so moving that it translated all the inner feelings of one Bharathi to another. The tune left such an impact that inspired Anandha Bharathi, who was then composing tunes to “Uththara Ramayanam”, to use this tune for one of his songs. He improvised a little on Gopalakrishna Bharathi’s tune and composed the song “mahi paripaalanam cheythaanE raaman – ayOththi thannil19”. Later, Ariyalur Sadogopa Iyengar used this tune in one of the songs in his book “Ramayana chinthanai”. (Pallavi line of thast song is “unadharul mahimaiyai yaadhenRE solvEn – udhavaa vazhi pulvEn”. There are several incidents similar to this where Gopalakrishna Bharathi’s songs have won acclaim from fellow musicians and inspired his contemporary composers.
